Stories of Song & Scripture is our new blog series through which members of the Huddersfield Parish Church family share their favourite hymns, songs of worship and passages from scripture, giving an insight into what it means to them and why.
Today’s hymn and passage from scripture have been chosen by Sharron.
“My favourite hymn is ‘Amazing Grace.’
‘Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
T’was blind but now I see.’
“It’s my favourite hymn for two reasons. Firstly, it was my Nanna’s name. Secondly, it speaks for me about my recovery from addiction – I once was lost.
“My favourite passage from scripture is Philippians 4:13. ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ That is all that I can do – all things through my Lord Jesus. My strength.
“My feelings about Amazing Grace and the passage from Philippians are summed up really well in this poem by Ron Baratono, ‘The Broken Pieces”:
God’s blessed me many times
it’s hard to feel the pain
the yesterdays of anger
and days it always rained.
All that broken pieces
that fell onto the floor
were put back together
even better than before.
Rolling with life’s changes
that’s what we have to do
no matter how hard it seems
it’s God that always knew.
For all the broken pieces
God placed upon the shelf
He blessed me in so many ways
they seemed to fix themselves.”
