 “It doesn’t rain unless it pours” – and the Vicar of Huddersfield is not just talking the rain that we’ve had of late or about the fabric and roofs of St. Peter’s

 St. Peter’s Church in the town centre of Huddersfield received further good news with further grants of £40,000 from the National Churches Trust, plus a further £7,500 from the Garfield Weston Foundation towards the restoration of the Victorian building.

 This follows  a substantial grant of £155,000  towards restoration work from English Heritage – the Vicar, Church Wardens and Parochial Church Council were looking towards a great deal of hard work to raise money to match fund the grant.

“Accepting the help from English Heritage committed us to raising the best part of £60,000 from other grant making bodies and good honest fund raising,” The Rev’d Canon Simon Moor, said: “but the notification of not one but two further offers of help is astonishing.”

The congregation has still to raise around £10,000 to pay for this phase of the restoration.

Simon begins the West Highland Way on Monday 14^th – 96 mile in total. He hopes to raise a significant amount through sponsorship.

 A MEMORIAL service for all those wanting to pay their respects and remember all the men and women who have died in the war in Afghanistan will be held in Huddersfield on Sunday.

 The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Rev Stephen Platten will preach at the service which will be held in Huddersfield Parish Church, St Peter’s in the town centre at 3pm.

The vicar of Huddersfield, the Rev Simon Moor, said he had been touched by the number of local people, veterans and local organisations that had been in touch to ask if he could organise a service for them to pay their respects following the deaths of the six young soldiers who died in a road bomb in southern Afghanistan on March 6.

Five of the men were from the 3^rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment whose historic home is the town of Halifax and three of them were from Huddersfield and Holme Valley areas. Their funerals were held last week.

The Revd Simon Moor said:  “I have been struck by the weight of feeling of people for these recent sad deaths and many had asked if we could do something.

“This memorial service is a chance for the town and the wider community to come together, pay their respects and remember all our young men and women who given their lives for their country out there,” he added.

Bishop Platten said: “The Church is committed to doing everything it can to support the families of those involved in the war in Afghanistan and indeed the wider community who have been touched by recent events.”

Bishop Platten is the lead spokesperson for defence issues in the House of Lords, where he sits as one of 26 bishops. Last year he was heavily involved in securing the Military Covenant within the Armed Forces Bill.

Books of condolence are still open in Huddersfield Parish Church and in Halifax Minster – historically the home of the Regiment  - and they are available for anyone to sign.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!

At 3pm on Sunday 13^th a Memorial Service will be held at Huddersfield Parish Church to remember the six young men who died in March while serving in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Nigel Coupe, aged 33 from 1st Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment; and Corporal Jake Hartley, 20; Private Anthony Frampton, 20; Private Christopher Kershaw, 19; Private Daniel Wade, 20; and Private Daniel Wilford, 21;  from 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment will be honoured by family, friends and civil dignitaries.

The general public are invited to pay their respects at St Peter’s church after the funerals last week of the three soldiers from the Huddersfield area.

The Rev’d Canon Simon Moor said, “This is an opportunity for ordinary people who were unable to attend the funerals to pay their respects in a public arena.”

The Major of Huddersfield, Councillor Eric Firth will be in attendance and the Bishop of Wakefield the Right Rev’d Stephen Platten will give the address.
